Randy Pitchford, the CEO of Gearbox, has hinted that a new Borderlands game is in the works and may be announced soon. In a recent interview, Pitchford expressed confidence that fans will be “very, very happy” with the studio’s next project. “I haven’t been perfect at hiding the fact that we’re working on many things, and that we’re working on big things,” Pitchford said.
I’m confident that our fans will be very, very happy with the next video game project when we announce it. And I will tell you that we’re not going to make people wait for a long time.”
While Pitchford did not provide specific details about the upcoming game, he suggested that it could be revealed before the end of the year or possibly even sooner. He also mentioned that the studio has its “biggest and best team” working on the project, which is “exactly what our fans want from us.”
The last main entry in the Borderlands series was Borderlands 3, released in 2019.
Pitchford hints at upcoming Borderlands project
However, fans have seen several spin-offs in recent years, including New Tales from the Borderlands and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, both released in 2022. Pitchford hinted that the success of Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, a fantasy-themed game set in the Borderlands universe, could influence the direction of future projects.
We had a bigger result with the first Wonderlands game than we did with the first Borderlands game, so that’s something we can build on,” he said. Many fans are speculating whether the new game will be a direct sequel to Borderlands 3 or another spin-off set in the same universe. With the Borderlands movie set to release on August 9th in the US, it seems that the franchise is poised for a big year ahead.
