Mega Man Development

Capcom has announced that it is exploring ways to develop new Mega Man games more consistently. During a recent shareholders meeting, Capcom addressed the future of the franchise, stating, “Mega Man is one of our highly-valued IPs and we are considering how to create games for it on an ongoing basis.”

The last major entry in the Mega Man series was released in 2018. While there have been several retro compilations of older Mega Man titles in recent years, brand-new entries are infrequent.

The releases of Mega Man 9 in 2008, Mega Man 10 in 2010, and Mega Man 11 in 2018 are the only significant new additions in the past 15 years. According to Capcom’s data, the Mega Man series has sold over 38 million units during its 36-year history. Recently, Capcom added all five Game Boy Mega Man games to its online service.

These games, known as Rockman World 1-5 in Japan, are not direct ports of the NES versions but share some similarities, particularly in featuring bosses from the console games. All five Game Boy games, except for Mega Man II, were outsourced to the studio Minakuchi Engineering and were well received by critics.

Mega Man II, however, was developed by Japan System House and was the least favored by Mega Man co-designer Keiji Inafune, who noted that the studio was unfamiliar with the series’ nuances. Consequently, Capcom returned to Minakuchi Engineering for subsequent titles. This potential increase in the frequency of new Mega Man games marks a promising development for fans of the iconic series.

Capcom’s confirmation that it is exploring ongoing developments for Mega Man offers some hope for new future installments. Fans have eagerly expressed their desires for new Mega Man content, ranging from a revival of the Mega Man Legends series to an entirely new mainline game. There are also calls for remasters, like the beloved Mega Man Powered Up for modern consoles.

The anticipation for a fresh Mega Man game is palpable, with fans suggesting innovative ideas and eagerly waiting for Capcom’s next move. Whether it be Mega Man 12, new remakes, or entirely new spin-offs, the blue bomber’s legacy continues to inspire and excite gamers worldwide.
